North American Buteau Family Reunions

The 400th Anniversary of Quebec was held during the year 2008.

We had planned to attempt another Canadian based North American Reunion sometime during this celebration.

There was no response indicating any Reunion interest to us at this time.

We need help on any Reunion that is setup.  Please contact

webmaster to help with the next North American Buteau Family Reunion.

We are running a Reunion Survey to determine what might be the best approach to future Family Reunion activity.

If you have not already completed the Survey, please do so.

The Montmagny Buteau Reunion 2001 Story

The Buteau Reunion 2001 was an unqualified success.

Over two hundred of the Buteau clan participated in varied programs which spanned Friday, August 10th through Sunday, August 12th. The Reunion banquet, the highlight of the event, was completely sold out and had a substantial waiting list for most of the last weeks prior to the assemblage.

The two hotels we selected were ideal for the purpose. The O’iseliere and the Florimay were about a ½ mile apart, owned by the same family, and between them provided all the facilities needed. All major Reunion activities were scheduled at the Hotel O’iseliere.

There were Mini-Reunions among a number of families whose members saw the Reunion as an opportunity to get together with their own close relatives for the first time in many years. The mini-reunion concept will be used to promote future reunions since it appears to produce a larger, more enthusiastic group.

Dress was very casual, even for the banquet. It was suggested that swimsuits be brought as both hotels had swimming pools.

A main feature of the gathering was the highly effective wall displays, including:

Kathy Buteau’s Buteau Reunion Memorial Quilt, was signed by every member of each family attending. This quilt will be returned to all future Buteau Family Reunions and Kathy designed it to expand as large as necessary. The quilt is highly colorful with the flags of the countries sewn into the design. It was a focal point of the Reunion for many attendees. Photos of the quilt will appear on each of the family’s websites.

Virginia (Jean) Saul’s Look Park Photographic Reunion Display.  The Lewiston, Maine branch held a Buteau Family Reunion in Springfield, Massachusetts, in the summer of 2000. Jean (her mother and dad named her Virginia, but she prefers Jean) had wall space problems and was unable to present her complete display at that time. Most of the pictures for the Look Park Lewiston Branch Reunion are presented on the Buteau Family website under the Branch Reunion page.

George H. Buteau’s 56 foot long Ancestral Wall Chart. This monster wall chart contained all male descendants of Mathurin Buteau and was another high point of the Reunion. The chart was current right up to the beginning of the Reunion. Many family groups traced their history back through time at this display. Traffic at this display was extremely high during the entire weekend.

The Program was planned to be as follows:

Friday, August 10, 2001

9:00-12:00 AM               Individual interviews with family genealogists
10:00 AM                      Conference on Buteau Family History  (English)
11:00 AM                      Conference on Buteau Family History  (French)
2:00-4:00 PM                 Individual Interviews with family genealogists
3:00 PM                        Conference on how to develop a family tree  (English)
4:00 PM                        Conference on how to develop a family tree  (French)
5:00-7:00 PM                 Welcome Cocktail with the Mayor of Montmagny

What actually occurred was that few people arrived on Friday morning and most of the group members spent the time working on their respective presentations and completing equipment setup.

Friday afternoon the crowds started to arrive and the function room became wall-to-wall Buteaus.

The Cocktail Party….Friday night.

At this point, there were about 80 Buteaus in the room when the Mayor of Montmagny, Mr. Jean-Claude Croteau, arrived. He was introduced in French and English by Danielle Buteau Langlois, who handled much of the French/English translation announcements throughout the Reunion.

The Mayor made a short speech in both French and English, extolling the virtues of the Montmagny area as a vacation spot and then mingled with the crowd for about an hour. Everyone participated in a champagne toast with the mayor for the success of the Buteau Family Reunion.

During the Party, the crowd was elated to welcome the arrival of an unexpected guest, “Pierre Buteau”  aka H. Gerard Buteau, in a 18th century period costume. “Pierre Buteau” formally welcomed the Mayor and thereafter mingled with the crowd for a photo shoot. Both youngsters and oldsters were delighted.

All of the crowd signed the Book of Montmagny beneath the Montmagny flag as part of the ceremonies. The Mayor then presented a symbol of the Montmagny area, a white goose plaque, and the full-sized flag of Montmagny to the President of the Groups, Bob Buteau. Both items will be displayed in all future Reunions. Bob Buteau presented a Buteau Family Reunion 2001 plaque to the Mayor and thanked him for his participation.

The Mayor and the Reunion Group had provided substantial quantities of the “bubbly” and canapés for the gathering, served by the Hotel staff. Sleep came easier for some that night. Others spent time in nearby Quebec or a carnival in downtown Montmagny before attempting sleep.

8:30 PM                        Evening Program

Family History was on most attendees’ minds on Saturday. There were computer-based stations for both taking family history and generating family history reports. A few attendees went to Quebec for some of the festivities being held there.

The Genealogy Stations on that day were provided by:

·         Virginia (Jean) Saul with her Lewiston Maine Buteau branch book. Jean snapped a lot of pictures during the event which will appear in the Buteau Family website as they become available.

·         George H. Buteau with the complete master family database on computer. George interviewed, snapped a lot of pictures and generated reports for many families.

·         H. Gérard Buteau and his “Buteau” and “Bluteau” books had continuous discussions with French speaking families about their respective family histories.

·         John Buteau and his family and Blue Island branch books and pictures on computer. John spent most of the entire weekend scanning pictures and documents for our family’s history. He brought a tremendous number of Blue Island Buteau Family pictures to the Reunion.

·         Robert J (Bob) Buteau with the master family database on computer. Bob also interviewed, snapped pictures and scanned photos and documents throughout the weekend.

·         Danielle Buteau Langlois with the master family database on computer. Danielle interviewed the French speaking Clan members and scanned her share of documents and photos.

Saturday presentations included:

·         Computer projector “Presentation on how to develop your own family tree”. Speakers: H. Gérard Buteau (French) and George H. Buteau (English)

·         Computer projector “Interactive conference on the Buteau family history”. Speakers: George H. Buteau (English) and Danielle Langlois (French)

These presentations were fully attended and appreciated with the crowds shifting from French-speaking to English-speaking attendees as each presentation was announced.

Our large function room was going to be used as the Reunion Banquet room, requiring everyone to leave by 3:30 PM on Saturday. Hotel staff made the transformation while some of the crowd headed outside for local activities. There was a poignant moment when the entire crowd decided to head out to the front of the Hotel for picture taking. These and other pictures taken during the reunion will also be shown on the Buteau Family website as soon as they become available.

The Banquet, Saturday night

Promptly at 6:00 PM, the Banquet room doors were opened and the waiting crowd rushed in to claim their seats. The room filled within minutes. The dinner was a typical five-course French service repast that was enjoyed by all. The service staff was excellent considering the completely full function room. When the dinner was over, the program began:

Danielle Langlois was the English announcer and Johanne Buteau Brunnelle was the French announcer.

A formal welcome to the First Annual Buteau Reunion Banquet was given, followed by the introduction of the Buteau Genealogy Group and Buteau Reunion Group members to the Attendees.   There was an announcement of Association Officers and special committees.

  • Robert J. Buteau was elected President and Chairman of the Board.
  • Danielle Buteau Langlois was elected Chairperson of the Buteau Reunion Group and a Board member.
  • George H. Buteau was elected Chairperson of the Buteau Genealogy Group and Board member.
  • Russell Jean Buteau, Lorraine Buteau Papasavas, became members of the Buteau Genealogy Group.
  • Daniel Langlois, Katherine Buteau, Kaylene Dawn Buteau, Annette Buteau Sexton, became members of the Buteau Reunion Group.

George Buteau followed with a short talk on how the Buteau Groups developed and what they plan to accomplish. I am including his actual remarks here.

I am George Buteau, a member of the Buteau Genealogy Group. I actually started collecting bits and pieces of genealogy information on the Buteau family in 1965. My career and my family kept me occupied enough that I did not pursue any genealogy research until 1988. That year, a friend introduced me to the Mormon Family History Center in Oakland, CA. On my very first visit, I found my great-grandfather, Damase Buteau and his young family in Connecticut in 1880. I was hooked.

By 1991, I had traced my Buteau line back to Pierre Buteau and Perrette Loryot. In 1992, Bob Buteau and I made contact and exchanged our Buteau genealogy data. We communicated for a year or two by mail and by telephone with less and less frequency and then stopped altogether. During 1996, I discovered the internet and e-mail. In early 1997, Virginia (Jean) Saul and I connected by e-mail after I came across a message she had written to a French genealogy newsgroup. We exchanged Buteau genealogy data for a year or two. Bob and I re-discovered each other by e-mail the same year and it wasn’t long before Bob, Jean and I were exchanging e-mail and Buteau genealogy information. We were joined that year by Sister Karen Teague and Joyce Clark who were also searching for their Buteau origins. In early 1998, Gerard Buteau started sharing his Buteau genealogy information with us first through his friend, Andre Boudreault’s e-mail and by fax. John Buteau joined the group in 1998 and when Gerard got a computer later that year, we had a small group of seven Buteau genealogists exchanging our genealogy research information with each other by e-mail. Danielle Langlois is the most recent member of the group having joined in 2000.

Although it was around 1997 or 1998 that Bob got the idea that we should be the Buteau Genealogy Group, he took us a step further to the internet by establishing the “www.buteaufamily.com” website (in 1998). In the meantime, Gerard had established his Buteau genealogy website in French at “www.buteau.qc.ca”. Last year, Bob gave birth to the idea of having a Buteau family reunion during 2001.

After months of planning and preparation, here we are tonight, thanks to Bob’s vision.

A moment of silence followed in honor of those family members who passed on in the previous year.    They included:

  • Marianna Zlotorzynski Buteau, wife of Jean Baptiste Emile Buteau and mother of Emile John Buteau; August 15, 2000.

  • Jeannette Buteau, daughter of Odias Buteau and Delina Carrier and wife of Louis Roberge; August 25, 2000 in Levis, QC.

  • Gisele Brochu Buteau, wife of Alfred Buteau; November 9, 2000 in St. Lambert, QC.

  • Roger Buteau, son of Joseph Arthur Buteau and Odelie Carrier and husband of Denise Auger Buteau; December 11, 2000 in Levis, QC.

  • Marthe Lemieux Buteau, wife of Willie Buteau; January 13, 2001 in Quebec, QC.

  • Anne Marie Buteau, daughter of Joseph Buteau and Anna Blanchet and wife of Arthur Lachance; January 26, 2001 in Quebec, QC.

  • Antoine Marcel Buteau, son of Wilfrid Buteau and Rosalie Guillemette and husband of Yolande St. Pierre Buteau; February 6, 2001 in Levis, QC.

  • Lucienne Perreault Buteau, wife of Noel Buteau; February 6, 2001 in Montreal, QC.

  • Grace Lillian Woodard Buteau, wife of Rene Joseph Buteau, Sr. and mother of Robert John Buteau; February 9, 2001 in Sudbury, MA.

  • Robert W. Buteau, son of Edward L. Buteau and Lillian Rice and husband of Norma Jane Hazlewood Buteau; April 12, 2001 in Cleveland, OH.

  • Louise Adele Irene Roux Buteau, wife of Joseph Philibert Buteau; April 18, 2001 in Auburn, ME.

  • Armandine Beaudoin Buteau, wife of Rosaire Buteau; April 20, 2001 in Levis, QC.

  • Zenaide Gilbert Buteau, wife of Josaphat Buteau; April 26, 2001 in St. Prosper, QC.

Awards and Presentations were made for:

Most mature-female                   Lucienne Buteau of Montmagny, QC, Age 92
Most mature-male                      Charles-Edouard Buteau of St Prosper, QC, Age 82

Traveled the farthest                  Kaylene Dawn Buteau of St Jose, CA

Andre Boudreault, friend of the Buteau Family, spoke about developing a registration of the Buteau family name and crest.

Announcement of the location of Reunion 2002, in which Buteaus from France will be invited, was Chicago, Illinois. Plans have been developing since May of this year.

Sunday, August 12, 2001

10:00 AM                   Mass at Berthier-sur-Mer
2:00 PM                     Conference on Buteau Family History  (English)
3:00 PM                     Conference on Buteau Family History  (French)
5:00 PM                     Buteau Reunion 2001 Ends

Mass was held at Notre Dame de L’Assomption Church at Berther-sur-Mer. The church was filled to capacity with the Buteau Association members. The family was mentioned from the altar on three different occasions. The Church was impressive and the singing and instrumental music by a young lady was inspiring. The parish cemetery is located just in back of the Church and many of the headstones carried the Buteau name. Following that, the attendees en masse attended a local restaurant brunch suggested by Danielle Buteau Langlois, and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the conviviality among the Clan members.

Sunday afternoon was quieter than Saturday but busy as attendees left for plane reservations or started the travel home by car. The presentations were less well-attended but lively. Questions about the family were continuous.

As 5:00 PM approached, the last of the attendees were saying their goodbyes to the Group members and their close family relatives. The general comments were that the Reunion had been a fantastic one and all hoped they would continue.

If we’ve missed the names of some Buteau attendees along the way, we’re sorry. Our record-keeping didn’t seem as important as socializing with relatives we hadn’t seen for years and many we had never seen. We were pleased to learn that a number of married Buteau women came without their husbands who could not attend because of the demands of business.

Summary:

Family websites will contain all the material from the Reunion as it becomes available. They are www.buteaufamily.com and www.buteau@qc.ca.

Success as a Reunion was very evident and striking. We have already received commitments from a large number to attend the Chicago Reunion 2002.

We found new respect for our heritage and the legacy left by our forbears. Our numbers are much greater than we expected. One comment that I heard came from Robert Buteau of New Brunswick. He said that he has traveled around the world and this was the first time he met others with the same Buteau surname. He said he was almost overwhelmed by the sheer number of kin he didn’t know he had.

We found Buteaus are much brighter and more loving than we imagined. Family units are more cohesive than we expected.

We were pleased that the Reunion was held. Our special committees take pride in our achievements.

We are working hard on Chicago. We don’t know what to expect in the way of attendance but we may have as many as 600 at the next assemblage.

Plan on being one of the 600, one of our Buteau Family Association. You will never enjoy anything as much as time spent with those who share a special kinship. Ask anyone who was at Montmagny.
